Projections on Convex Sets in the Relaxed Limit

The paper establishes the continuity of the best approximation, or the projection, of a function in L _p for p[1,), on a closed convex set in the space, when the set varies and converges to a limit set in the Young-measure relaxation of the space. To this end a strong-type convergence and a convexity structure are identified on the space of Young measures. The appropriate convergence of sets with respect to which the continuity holds is the Mosco convergence of sets associated with the strong-type convergence of functions.     

The Order of Best Approximation in Some Classes of Functions

Starting from the equivalence between the Ditzian–Totik modulus and , where , in this article large classes of functions are introduced for which the modulus can be easily calculated. As a consequence, very good estimates for the bestapproximation are obtained. The attempts to estimate or calculate themodulus can be a very intricateproblem.

The best quadrature formula based on Hermite information for the class KW~2[a,b]

The best quadrature formula has been found in the following sense:for afunction whose norm of the second derivative is bounded by a given constant and thebest quadrature formula for the approximate evaluation of integration of that function canminimize the worst possible error if the values of the function and its derivative at certainnodes are known.The best interpolation formula used to get the quadrature formula aboveis also found.Moreover,we compare the best quadrature formula with the open compoundcorrected trapezoidal formula by theoretical analysis and stochastic experiments.     

Extended Gauss–Markov Theorem for Nonparametric Mixed-Effects Models

The Gauss–Markov theorem provides a golden standard for constructing the best linear unbiased estimation for linear models. The main purpose of this article is to extend the Gauss–Markov theorem to include nonparametric mixed-effects models. The extended Gauss–Markov estimation (or prediction) is shown to be equivalent to a regularization method and its minimaxity is addressed. The resulting Gauss–Markov estimation serves as an oracle to guide the exploration for effective nonlinear estimators adaptively. Various examples are discussed. Particularly, the wavelet nonparametric regression example and its connection with a Sobolev regularization is presented.
